The time-dependent response of an ensemble of noninteracting test particles to a growing oval distortion in a model disk galaxy is calculated numerically. For the adopted model, the response inside corotation is found to be barlike and in phase with the perturbation, whereas outside corotation a two-armed, trailing spiral pattern is observed during the growth of the perturbation. Long periods of growth of the oval distortion that are in agreement with some recent N-body calculations lead to spiral patterns that persist for many galactic rotation periods.
