M31 has been observed using a new near-infrared spectrometer. A slit 120 arc seconds in length was positioned with the nucleus at the east end. A second set of spectra were taken extending an additional 120 arc seconds to the west. A spectral resolution of 3800 was used to cover the range from 2.25microns to 2.35microns . This range was chosen so that a search for gradient in the strength of CO bands in late-type stars could be carried out simultaneously with a study of the variation of the strength of CaI. The spectrometer and observations were supported by NSF grant AST-9116442, and NASA provided the NICMOS3 array used to acquire these data.
