Observations are presented of the TiO δ(0,0) R-branch bandhead at 8860 Å, which were obtained with the CID camera on the main spectrograph at the McMath solar telescope. At a spectral resolution of 0.25 Å, a bandhead index is defined which is calibrated as a function of effective temperature for spectral types K4 to M6. This feature is a potentially useful tool for study of surface inhomogeneities on active stars as well as a diagnostic for cool stellar atmospheres.
