Optical photometry of 18 carbon stars in the 3600-6700 A range was carried out at the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory in 1979. The observations were made with the 40-cm telescope, using the EMI-9789 QB photomultiplier. The results revealed that there are very strong differences in the spectral distribution of the intensity of carbon stars within a single spectral class at a given temperature. These differences suggest that nonthermal short-wavelength emission takes place on the surface of some of the stars. It is also speculated that there is a relationship between the presence of a dust envelope and the intensity of ultraviolet radiation. This assumption agrees with Ambartsumian's claim that the ejection of mass and excess ultraviolet radiation are manifestations of the process of decay of superdense prestellar matter.
