The propagation of Alfven waves is treated within the framework of a realistic model of the solar atmosphere without recourse to the eikonal approximation. The very low value of the transmittance (less than 1 percent) indicates that Alfven waves observed in the interplanetary medium have not been generated in the sun's convection zone. This conclusion is supported by Pioneer 6 data.
