The 1.35-cm line of H2O was searched for and not detected in comets Kohler (1977 XIV) and Meier (1978 XXI) with the Effelsberg and Haystack radio telescopes. The observed upper limits are consistent with the low signal expected for a thermal excitation of the water molecule if H2O is the parent molecule of OH. The previous detection of H2O in comet Bradfield (1974 III) by Jackson et al. (1976) is difficult to interpret even if nonthermal excitation prevailed in this comet.
