A petrographic and SEM study was performed on a 4.7 x 0.3 mm carbonaceous vein found in the Yamato-74130 ureilite. It is found that the vein contains a complex network of S-rich Fe-S-rich, Al-rich, and Si-rich regions. The elements (S, Fe, Al, Ca, and Na) in the internal regions of the vein are the elements that are strongly depleted in ureilites relative to carbonaceous chondrites. The presence of these elements in the carbonaceous veining suggest that the internal materials are remnants of drain channels for the depleted elements produced during the formation of ureilites from carbonaceous chondrites. It is concluded that the carbonaceous vein provides evidence that ureilites result from preferential melting and recrystallization of carbonaceous chondrites by a temperature-gradient zone refining process during a planetesimal-scale collision.
