Diogeness, a solar-flare diagnostic instrument being developed for the Soviet Koronas-I solar observatory (scheduled launch in the early 1990s), is described. Diogeness comprises (1) a high-resolution Bragg spectrometer (with four identical quartz crystals arranged in two Dopplerometer sections), (2) a soft-X-ray photometer (with two proportional counters and one scintillation detector), and (3) an onboard computer (for data processing and instrument control). The aim is to obtain measurements on solar-flare energy balance, including thermal energy, volumetric heating rate, conductive and convective loss rates, and the magnitude of directed and turbulent motion in the thermal plasma (on the basis of X-ray emission-line profiles). The emission lines to be observed are listed; the count rates expected for different classes of flares are estimated; and the calibration and alignment procedures are briefly characterized.
