This paper presents an accurate description of the level populations of the forbidden O I lines. Population ratios were obtained for the 2p4(3P/J/, 1D, 1S) metastable levels of neutral oxygen by means of 5-level atom. The results are compared to those of Smeding and Pottasch (1979) and Keenan and Berrington (1988), showing the present results to be significantly different from those reported by these authors. Rate coefficients are presented for all processes.
