The properties of compact steep-spectrum radio sources (CSSs) are discussed on the basis of data obtained with the European VLBI network, the MERLIN interferometer, and the VLA. A classification based on radio morphology is compiled, showing that there is a clear distinction between the radio structures of galaxies and quasars: galaxies generally have a simple double radio structure, sometimes with weak radio jets and weak radio cores, while quasars show either a triple structure with a strong central component or a jetlike or complex morphology. It is also shown that not less than 70 percent of the CSS sources are intrinsically small and that there is no major radio luminosity amplification by Doppler effects.
