Deep CCD images in B, V, R, I and CCD surface polarimetry of the Bok globule L 810 show that it harbors at least 12 and possibly 15 stars. Five of them are associated with cometary nebulae, which are all oriented approximately westwards. Some of the embedded stars, which were studied spectroscopically, show broad H-alpha emission lines with blueshifted absorption features; the infrared Ca II triplet emission is saturated, and in one case the O I 8446 line is present. These characteristics are typical of T Tauri stars interacting with dense circumstellar matter. If the cometary nebulae in L 810 are due to anisotropic mass loss along the local magnetic field lines, then the orientation of the field deep within the globule is substantially different from that in its outer parts, which might be influenced by external stellar winds originating in the Vulpecula OB I association. From the total number of foreground stars, as well as from their individual photometric distances, d = 2.0 + or - 0.3 kpc for L 810 is derived.
