The extremely bright short gamma-ray burst GRB051103 was localized by the interplanetary network to a region of the sky suggestively close to the bright nearby galaxies M81 and M82, and its energetics and other observed characteristics are consistent with an origin as a giant magnetar flare in one of these galaxies, similar to the 27 December flare from SGR 1806-20. Here we present results of a search, using Fourier analysis of the light curve of GRB051103, for a soft periodic X-ray component similar to that observed in the 27 December event and other giant flares from Galactic and LMC magnetars. No such component is observed, limiting the luminosity of the soft periodic component of a hypothetical giant flare in M81/M82 to < 100 times that of the periodic tail of the 27 December event.
