The low-power radio sources 3C 371 and 2201+044 were discovered to contain X-ray and optical kpc-scale jets in our earlier Chandra and HST exposures. To better quantify their properties, we acquired deeper Chandra (35 ks) and multicolor HST observations of both sources.
These follow-up observations confirm our previous detection of both jets, and reveal new complexities. Optical counterparts to additional radio knots are seen thanks to the improved sensitivity of the ACS camera on smaller scales. X-ray emission from the larger-scale jets, which appear to disrupt into broad winds, is detected. A particularly interesting result is returned by the analysis of the jet spatial structure in a direction orthogonal to its axis. Here, optical and X-ray knots are well resolved at various transversal distances from the core. Moreover, evidence for additional X-ray emission along the jet walls is present, with a softer spectrum (Gamma 2.2) than the main central portion of the jet, or spine (Gamma 1.3-1.8). This result was confirmed by extensive simulations, and appears to be a >10sigma effect. Only upper limits to the radio (1.4 GHz) and optical (5550 A) fluxes of the walls can be derived. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a Chandra jet is resolved transversally to the jet axis. This result suggests complexity in the jet structure such as velocity shear between the the spine and the walls. Its broad implications will be highlighted.
