Astrophysical black holes are one of the few physical settings in which quantitative predictions of braneworld gravity models with large extra dimensions can be tested against observations. If the asymptotic curvature in the extra dimensions is finite and consistent with current experimental limits, the holographic description of astrophysical black holes leads to a prediction for their lifetimes that is significantly smaller than the Hubble time. Using the recent measurements of the position, three-dimensional spatial velocity, and mass of the black hole XTE J1118+480, I calculate a lower limit on its kinematic age. I then convert this into an upper limit on the asymptotic curvature in the extra dimensions of L<0.04 mm, which is an order of magnitude tighter than the limit obtained by table-top experiments of sub-mm gravity.
