We have assembled the integrated spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of a complete volume-limited sample of nearby Seyfert 2 galaxies. The data cover 15 photometric bands between the radio and hard X-ray. We find no correlation between overall SED shape and nuclear luminosity, suggesting that at non-X-ray frequencies the integrated light of the typical Seyfert 2 is dominated by the host galaxy. A comparison of the SEDs of nearby Seyfert 2s with those of absorbed AGNs in the Chandra Deep Field South (CDF-S) reveals no systematic differences between the properties of the two populations, despite the fact that many of the CDF-S sources appear to be normal in ground-based optical spectra. In our comparison, we have accounted for the way the luminosity function of a population is sample in a flux-limited survey like the CDF-S. Our results suggest that host-galaxy dilution - not some physical cause - is chiefly responsible for the normal optical appearance of distant absorbed AGNs.
