Title:
Low Ionization Nuclear Emission Line Regions: The "Missing Link" in the AGN
Population?
One third of all nearby spiral galaxies and nearly half of all nearby early-type galaxies are Low Ionization Nuclear Emission-line Regions (LINERs). The majority of LINERs are dust enshrouded regions, limiting the regimes in which they can be studied. X-ray studies of LINERs, however, show that at least some of these galaxies harbor AGN. In this talk, we present the results of a Chandra X-ray survey of nearly 50 LINERs. We find hard nuclear point sources morphologically consistent with AGN in 50% of our sample. In addition, when other AGN subclasses are included in the analysis, we find an intriguing correlation between the Eddington Ratio and the far-infrared luminosity as well as the IR-brightness of the host galaxy that extends over seven orders of magnitude in Eddington Ratio. Since the far-IR luminosity is a widely used measure of the star formation rate in galaxies, this correlation may imply a fundamental link between the growth of the black hole and the buildup of the host galaxy where LINERs represent the population of AGN just before accretion onto the black hole "turns off." Could LINERs be the missing evolutionary link between normal and active galaxies? Establishing the number of accretion-powered LINERs, the physics behind their ionization mechanism, and the relationship between their nuclear properties and those of the host galaxy will provide critical insight into the fundamental evolutionary questions of extragalactic research today. This research was funded by NASA grants NAG5-11432, NAG03-4134X, and the NASA GSRP.
