The H2O southern galactic Plane Survey (HOPS) is a 12mm line survey with the Mopra radiotelescope. It will cover 90 square degrees of the Galaxy between l=300 - 0 - 30 degrees and |b|<0.5 degrees. The main spectral lines covered (in order of importance) are: water masers; ammonia (1,1), (2,2), (3,3), (6,6) and (9,9); cyanoacetylene (HCCCN); methanol (both masing and thermal) and radio recombination lines. Such a survey will complement the methanol multibeam survey, and lead to a bettter understanding of the connection between water and methanol masers. It will also identify many previously unknown sites of star formation in our Galaxy through ammonia and cyanoacetylene emission. This will lead to a more complete picture of star formation throughout the southern Galaxy. We have already surveyed 31 square degrees of the Galaxy in early 2008 and intend to follow up in this semester with observations of a further 30 square degrees.
