We propose to observe high-mass star forming regions (hot cores) in lines of vibrationally excited HCN. The inner structure of these sources, including their heating engine, is unknown, but information on this would be highly valuable for theories of massive star formation and for the interpretation of future line surveys. Vibrationally excited HCN traces very hot gas and has strong, compact lines at 7mm, which we want to observe with ATCA in its 6-km configuration. We will interprete location, extension and intensity of the lines with detailed radiative transfer modeling to constrain the inner structure.
