Grand Unified Theories offer a framework for a top-down production mechanism of ultra-high energy particles (> 1020 eV) through the decay of topological defects produced in the early Universe, giving a large amount of photons through the decay of pi^0's; another source is the GZK effect (photoproduction of pions from protons in the CMBR). In this range, the mean free path of photons in CMBR increases with energy, so that the upper end of the observed spectrum could contain an appreciable fraction of photons; in that case, pair production in the magnetic field of the earth (above the atmosphere), combined with the LPM effect in air (suppression of e.m. processes above a few 1019 eV), results in characteristic anisotropies with respect to the local field direction; we describe how the Auger Hybrid Observatory could observe them in both longitudinal and lateral profiles, and muonic/electromagnetic ratio.
