A million degree component of the interstellar medium in the bulge, disk and halo of 10 spiral galaxies has been searched for with ROSAT. In the case of galaxies with moderate star formation rates (NGC 4449, NGC 4631), galaxies with starburst nuclei (NGC 253, NGC 3079), and active galaxies (NGC 1566, NGC 4258) the hot medium is detected, while for the ``normal'' galaxies (NGC 4559, NGC 4656, NGC 5907) no diffuse X-ray emission from hot interstellar medium is discernable. The detection of such a medium in NGC 4565 indicates that this galaxy is (was) active, contrary to the expectations from other wavelengths. The (non-) detections of the hot interstellar medium for our sample are discussed in the framework of the morphology and evolution of the galaxies, and the findings are compared to results obtained for other galaxies.
