We derive mass functions directly from an analytical description of the non-linear density field. This allows us to go beyond the usual Press-Schechter approximation and to calculate multiplicity functions by directly considering the density field at the epoch under consideration, for any density contrast. We apply this method to obtain the galaxy luminosity function. The latter is found to correspond to objects with density contrasts from 177 up to 10 000. We are able to reproduce simultaneously the observed Tully-Fisher relation as well as the luminosity function. The same approach, with the same parameters, is also seen to account for the observed Lyman-alpha absorbers multiplicities and their redshift evolution.
