When the first light of the first 8.2 m VLT Telescope was obtained at Cerro Paranal on 25 May 1998 the VLT/VLTI Programme entered a new and important phase: the scientific utilisation of this powerful machine. The innovative aspects of the VLT Array Telescope, the first results, and the future possibilities will be presented and discussed. When the Telescope is made available to the astronomical community on 1 April 1999 new modes of observation and more archiving possibilities will be offered.
