We present the formalism to study the effective energy momentum tensor (EEMT) of gravitational perturbations in the Schwarzschild metric. By choosing the Regge-Wheeler gauge, we show that the components of the EEMT have a regular physical behaviour both at infinity and on the horizon, even if the metric coefficients are not well defined there. One application of this result is to study the problem of back-reaction of the emission of gravitational waves due to Hawking evaporation.
