Compact object mergers are a primary candidate sources of gravitational wave radiation. We estimate the rate with which such mergers take place using the method of population synthesis of binaries. Our model takes into account in detail the effects of the initial kick a neutron star receives at birth. We investigate the effect of the kicks on the expected compact object merger rate and show that it changes by about order of magnitude when the kick velocity varies within its current observational bounds.
