Recent measurements of the TeV gamma-ray spectrum of Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) and Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) by the Whipple and HEGRA collaborations stimulated efforts to derive upper limits on the energy density of the cosmic infrared background (CIRB). We review these results, together with the previous limits obtained from the studies of Mrk 421 gamma-ray emission, to point out several deficiencies in the previous analyses and derive new limits for an intergalactic absorption of 0.3-10 TeV photons. The lack of the curvature in the gamma-ray spectra of both active galactic nuclei (AGN) imposes a severe limitation on the shape of the CIRB spectrum (from .04 eV to 7 eV) which has to be consistent with the observational evaluations based on deep surveys of extragalactic sources in the near- and mid-infrared and previous direct experimental CIRB upper limits.
