The gamma-ray emission of the blazar Markarian 421 above 250 GeV was observed by the CAT imaging Cherenkov telescope during two periods: December 1996 - May 1997 and December 1997 - May 1998; results on the source variability are presented on the basis of data selected by requiring good atmospheric conditions, representing 77 hours of ``on-source'' observations and 33 hours of ``off-source'' data. The energy spectrum of the source for the flaring periods is given above 350 GeV.
