I review a self-consistent model based on advection-dominated accretion flows that attempts to unify four out of five known spectral states of black hole X-ray binaries: the quiescent, low, intermediate and high states. This model provides a plausible explanation for state transitions observed both in transient and persistent systems. We show that the spectra and light curves calculated with this unified scenario agree well with observations of the soft X-ray Transients Nova Muscae, GRO J0422+32, as well as the persistent source Cyg X-1.
