Most soft X-ray transient (SXT) are believed to be X-ray binaries with black hole candidate primaries; 4U 1608-52 belongs to the rare group of SXTs with neutron star. 4U 1608-52 underwent a strong X-ray outburst in February 1998 and optical observations with the ESO-NTT have been performed while the X-ray outburst was ongoing. We will present the results of this campaign and discuss the optical behaviour of SXTs with neutron star primaries relative to black hole candidates in SXTs.
