We have carried out the first survey of the distribution of dipping with orbital phase in Cygnus X-1. Using archival data from many X-ray missions, and also observations with Rossi-XTE ASM, we have found an asymmetry of the distribution at about phase zero, and an additional peak at phase 0.6. These features are seen in the variation of the column density of the winds in Supermassive X-ray Binaries. This provides evidence that dipping ultimately relates to the wind density. Modeling is complicated by strong ionizing effect of the X-ray source; however, we show that radiative recombination may be important in providing neutral absorber. Finally, these results are the first X-ray evidence for a stream flowing from the companion towards the black hole.
