The RXTE has observed black hole, neutron star, white dwarf X-ray binaries. Several new black hole candidates have been observed, in addition to the first-known microquasars, and famed but still enigmatic Cygnus X-1. Temporal and spectral signatures show that they can be used to study effects of strong gravity. Transient and persistent low-mass X-ray binaries, containing low magnetic field neutron stars, are revealing important aspects of the neutron stars and the accretion onto them. Accreting neutron stars with strong magnetic fields are providing new evidence on the magnetic fields and the structure of the accretion at the magnetosphere, while accreting magnetic white dwarfs have exhibited resolved structure at the magnetic poles. The monitoring programs for transient outbursts and for disk and binary modulations provide evidence about these phenomena, but also sampling of the range of accretion rate and aspects.
