In order to directly constrain the hypothesis that much of the Galactic dark matter is in the form of white dwarfs, we require accurate cooling and atmospheric models to describe the appearance of very old white dwarf stars. I will present a series of models appropriate for this purpose. I find that previous theoretical attempts on this problem have suffered from considerable inaccuracies for ages larger than a few Gyr. The extant constraints are somewhat weaker than previously believed. Furthermore, many old white dwarfs should start to become bluer rather than redder with age.
