The interactions of accelerated particles with ambient matter produce a rich gamma ray line spectrum. Such gamma ray lines have been observed from many solar flares showing that the energy contained in accelerated ions constitutes a large fraction of the released flare energy. Solar flare gamma ray spectroscopy has also provided unique ambient solar atmospheric abundances, including those for He, C, O, Ne, Mg, Si and Fe. Similar gamma ray lines have not yet been convincingly observed from Galactic targets. However, the reports on the Orion detections with CGRO/COMPTEL, which have been recently withdrawn by the COMPTEL team, have led to a large body of theoretical work that will be relevant for future INTEGRAL data, as well to other problems including light element nucleosynthesis. These topics will be reviewed.
