In recent papers [I. A. Arbab (1997) Gen. Rel. Grav. 29, 61; Tarkeshwar Singh, A. Beesham and W. S. Mbokazi (1998) Gen. Rel. Grav. 30, 573], bulk viscous cosmological models with variable gravitational and cosmological parameters have been derived. However, these models are based on the first order thermodynamic theory of Eckart [C. Eckart (1940) Phys. Rev. 58, 919]. This theory is not satisfactory as it permits the propagation of superluminal signals, and its equilibrium states are unstable [cf R. Maartens (1995) Class. Quantum Grav. 12, 1455]. These problems are overcome in the second order thermodynamic theory of Israel-Stewart [W. Israel and J. M. Stewart (1976) Phys. Lett. A 58, 213]. In the present work, we derive and discuss some cosmological models with variable G and Lambda and causal bulk viscosity.
