The use of the Tully-Fisher relation for deriving redshift independent distances requires particular attention. Through careful completeness analysis of the available samples, computation of reliable Malmquist bias corrections or extraction of unbiased subsamples are unavoidable steps toward a safe determination of the Hubble constant. I will review the various methods used, and show that, with the deepness reached by today's catalogues, the value of H_0 from field galaxies depends essentially on the primary calibration, i.e. the P-L relation of Cepheids.
