The ESA HIPPARCOS satellite has provided accurate parallaxes and proper motions for over 118,000 bright (V < 12) stars. These results have been used by several authors in the last two years to provide a number of new distance calibrations for primary distance indicators (including RR Lyrae and Cepheids). These various calibrations are briefly reviewed, remaining uncertainties are considered, and the present error bar is discussed with reference to the derived distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud.
