We discuss the hydrodynamics of the afterglow and its relation with the GRB. We show that the relation between the burst and the afterglow could be of two kinds, depending on whether the GRB is short or long. We built the spectra and light curves both in the self similar deceleration regime and during its very early set-up. We stress out the information that can be deduced from the early afterglow evolution that is missing later on, during the self-similar stage. Such information is important to constrain models for the inner engine.
