The amazing breakthroughs resulting from the detection and accurate localization of X-ray afterglows from Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) by the Italian-Dutch experiment Beppo-SAX have firmly established their cosmological origin, which was anticipated based on their global statistical properties. The subsequent optical observations of (candidate) host galaxies has shown that GRBs originate at large redshifts (z ~few) and that they might be associated with regions of enhanced star formation. Such a correlation is not unexpected, because many of the currently favored models involve massive stars or their remnants, such as NS/NS-NS/BH mergers or supernovae. We discuss the current status of GRBs as tracers of the cosmic star formation history.
