The 15-m SEST telescope is the ~nlque facility to study with high resolu~ Ion the molecular component of galaxles in the southern sky. One could object that galaxies in the northern sky already give a large enough sampie to investigate, but there are outstanding objects that can only be studied from the southern hemisphere; apart from the obvious Magellanic Clouds, it is well known that most beautiful barred galaxies, for example, are at low declinations (NGC 1300, NGC 1365, NGC 1097 ...).
