Scientific paper

The author has collected some selected aspects of prestellar cloud observations and theory, circumstellar disk observations and theory and protoplanetary disk properties derived from solar system observations, as well as some physical processes of special relevance. The purpose of this work has been to show how all these different aspects of the general problem of "star and planet formation" play their part in solving the puzzle that this topic presents. Further astronomical observations are needed to obtain a better understanding for the initial conditions in prestellar clouds, in particular the role of the magnetic field and for the removal of circumstellar disks.
