The ellipse fit of intensity sections of astronomical objects is a well known tool for the estimation of the ellipticity of the sections, possibly together with other geometrical parameters such as orientation and position angle. The results are satisfactory as long as the radial signal to noise ratio (RSNR) is high. If the RSNR is low, or if the object is discrete like a spatially resolved globular star cluster, the standard least squares fit yields bias errors which grow rapidly with the radial noise, in practice inhibiting the use of this method. An empirical analysis of the errors of the standard least squares ellipse fit versus the RSNR is presented, together with results obtained by means of an algorithm valid in low RSNR cases. The use of a Fourier descriptor procedure specialized for the estimate of ellipticity is also described.
