We have assessed the properties of the hot intragroup medium (IGM) in a sample of compact groups of galaxies, in which the late-type group members are generally highly HI deficient relative to similar field spirals. The goal is to establish whether galaxy interactions with a hot ambient medium can be responsible for the inferred HI deficit in these environments. Our Chandra and XMM-Newton observations reveal a remarkable diversity in the diffuse X-ray properties of the groups, implying that galaxy-IGM interactions are not generally important for driving HI out of the group galaxies. With few exceptions, this is confirmed by detailed numerical modelling of fiducial group galaxies orbiting within each group. We speculate on possible alternatives for the observed shortfall of cold ISM in these groups, including tidal interactions and rapid gas consumption through star formation.
