Methods Of Reduction: Ccd Images
Scientific paper
The stability and linearity characteristics of modern CCDs are very good and their photometric accuracy, tested in the laboratory, is comparable to traditional photomultipliers. In practical use, however, the accuracy of CCD photometry is limited by defects of the chips, cosmic ray events and, mainly, by blends of the stellar images. Thus, for many advanced astrophysical applications in the field of stellar photometry such as photometry in star clusters, the quality of the results depends on the capability of the reduction technique for measuring distorted and blended images. Three 2-dimensional reduction packages for stellar photometry are currently supported at ESO. A detailed comparison of performances of the reduction programs Romafot, Daophot and Inventory was carried out.
