The 30 keV peak in the X-ray background strongly suggests there should be a large number of highly obscured AGN in the local universe. However, the exact number of these objects remains unknown even though they could nearly double the space density of supermassive black holes. These Compton-thick AGN can be detected in the hard X-rays with INTEGRAL. We are carrying out a 3 Msec deep INTEGRAL survey of the XMM-LSS field, of which we have obtained and analysed 2.1 Msec to date. Here we present the first results, including new hard X-ray detections of 10 AGN detected with a source significance of at least 6. We present the 20-200 keV spectra of the brightest AGN as well as the properties of their optical counterparts.
This work was made possible by support from the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) through their graduate scholarship program and from NASA/INTEGRAL grant NNG05GM79G.
