Virtually all far-UV spectra of extragalactic sources show the both low velocity (LV) and high velocity (HV) OVI absorbers at z𕙘. The LV-OVI absorbers are identified with a hot gaseous component of the disk of our Galaxy, but the origin of the HV-OVI absorbers is controversial. Proposed origins are: (1) an extended Galactic halo or corona: (2) gas permeating our Local group, or (3) the local large scale structure. These different locations and origins imply large differences in the origin, and in the total baryonic mass of, these absorbers. Direct studies of the kinematics and physical properties of such absorbers do not provide unique answers.
We have started a program to systematically search for analogs of the z˜40; LV- and HV- OVI absorbers in external galaxies using AGN with good FUSE and HST UV spectra, that have a variety of host galaxy morphologies and local environment. Our findings will be compared with the distribution and physical properties of the local OVI absorbers, to gain insights into the origin of these enigmatic systems. We will present preliminary results from this program.
