I will present the results of a 20 ks ToO observation with XMM of the NLS1 Mkn 335 in an historical low state discovered by Swift. Long-term light curves suggest that this is the lowest X-ray flux state this AGN has ever been observed in. However, Mkn 335 is still sufficiently bright that its X-ray properties can be studied in detail. The complicated X-ray spectrum can be explained by a partial covereing absorber or X-ray reflection on the disk. High-resolution spectroscopy with the XMM RGS reveals the presence of strong soft X-ray emission lines. An optical spectrum taken in September 2007, which displays very strong highly ionized Fe lines, does not show any changes compared with a spectrum taken 8 years earlier, suggesting no change in the ionizing continuum.
