We have developed a theoretical model for the X-ray emission from
magnetars that takes into account the physical processes in their
atmospheres and magnetospheres. We present the results of our analyses
of the X-ray spectra of a number of Anomalous X-ray Pulsars using this
model. In particular we show how our study leads to the measurement of
the surface magnetic fields of the neutron stars and of the sizes of the
emitting regions and helps constrain the origin and energetics of the
outbursts in transient sources.
