We will describe recent efforts in modeling the thermal emission from the hot polar caps of rotation-powered millisecond pulsars. Application to X-ray spectroscopic/timing data of the three nearest millisecond pulsars has revealed that the pulse profiles are consistent with the presence of an optically-thick light-element atmosphere at the neutron star surface, as expected from X-ray binary evolution, while they are poorly described by a blackbody model. As the observed thermal X-ray pulse profiles of millisecond pulsars are sensitive to the stellar mass-to-radius ratio may potentially provide interesting constraints on the neutron star equation of state. This makes millisecond pulsars important targets of investigation for future planned X-ray facilities such as Constellation-X and XEUS. We will also discuss the prospects of using these observatories to conduct blind X-ray timing searches for pulsars not observable in the radio due to unfavorable viewing geometry.
