Cumulative data for stars and interstellar matter in and around the supergiant shell LMC 4 indicated that a very large scale star formation triggering event must have been at work. The space motion of the LMC, the rotation of that galaxy, and the observed interaction of its leading edge with the Milky Way halo suggest that very large scale star formation was triggered by the bow shock of the LMC.
