This book addresses all those astrophysicists who take interest in the structure, kinematics and evolution of low-mass galaxies. It comprises nine reviews of experts in this field, plus a host of shorter contributions and posters, all reflecting the enormous progress that has been made in the recent past, partly due to superb new observing facilities (e.g. Keck, HST), but also to computing facilities that have made numerical modelling incredibly powerful to understand, e.g., stellar dynamics or hydrodynamics of the interstellar gas. The book provides a quick overview of the recent achievements in dwarf galaxy research. This is naturally incentive for the understanding of stellar evolution and the interplay between the interstellar medium and star formation. Understanding the astrophysics of local (dwarf) galaxies is a necessary prerequisite for the comprehension of distant galaxies seen at earlier epochs. The proceedings also reflect the harvest of some 5 years of continuous education and research in our graduate school, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and run by the Astronomical Institutes of the Universities of Bonn and Bochum. It is documented here how efficient and fruitful a coordinated educational programme can be that focusses on a fascinating, and therefore booming, field of research in contemporary astrophysics.
