Kinoshita's (1977) nutation for the rigid earth has been improved by: (1) incorporating various values determined by Seidelmann (1982); (2) including second-order effects of the coupling between rotation of the earth and orbital motion of the moon; and (3) carrying out the calculations to 0.01 mas. A total of 156 terms have been added to the original 106 periodic terms. Special attention is given to the relation between the tidal potential and nutation theory. Oppolyzer terms are found to contribute to the Chandler Wobble normal mode, and their numerical values are obtained from given tidal-potential amplitudes. Nutation values computed from the tidal potential are found to be equivalent to those determined from the astronomical procedure to 0.01 mas for most periodic terms.
